Start with the actual appointment address

Use Palm Tran’s route maps and schedules for the exact place and day you plan to travel. A program name may refer to more than one office. Ask the provider to confirm the appointment entrance and expected finish time before assuming a route serves the correct site.

Plan outward and homeward travel separately. A convenient arrival route does not prove that the return is equally simple, particularly if the appointment finishes at a different part of the timetable. Include the walk between the stop and the entrance, not just time on the bus.

Compare single fares with passes using your actual boarding pattern

Palm Tran lists a $2 standard single bus trip, $5 one-day pass, $12 three-day pass, $20 seven-day pass and $70 31-day pass. Its fare page describes Paradise Pass fare capping and several payment options. Ask which rules apply to the payment method you plan to use.

In a fictional three-appointment week with one paid boarding outward and one homeward each day, six single fares cost $12. Buying a $5 day pass on each of those three days would total $15. This deliberately simple example does not assume extra transfers, other trips or a discount.

If instead an invented day requires four separately paid boardings at $2, the uncapped single-fare arithmetic is $8; the published $5 day pass offers a different comparison. Connection is a separate service to apply for

Palm Tran describes Connection as shared-ride paratransit for approved riders. Its 2026 information distinguishes Connection ADA for trip endpoints within or up to three-quarters of a mile of the fixed-route network from Connection Plus for trips with an endpoint outside that area. The agency must determine the applicable program and eligibility.

The published application contact is 561-649-9838, option 7. Ask about both the rider’s eligibility and the proposed pickup and drop-off locations. A treatment appointment alone is not an approval. Do not plan a first trip as if an application has already been accepted.

After approval, ask about reservation timing, pickup arrangements and the return trip. The general fare page lists $4 for a Connection single ride, but have the agency confirm the charge and program for your trip before budgeting around it. A time budget can reveal more than a distance estimate

Consider a fictional two-hour appointment three times a week. Allow 55 minutes outward, 65 minutes homeward and 20 minutes for arrival. Each day requires 120 + 55 + 65 + 20 = 260 minutes, or 4 hours 20 minutes. The weekly total is 13 hours.

Of that total, six hours are appointment time and seven hours are travel and arrival under the invented assumptions. A page that displays only “six hours per week” would omit more than half of the time this example requires. These figures are not a typical county commute or a provider schedule.

If each homeward trip takes 25 minutes longer than assumed, add 75 minutes weekly: the total becomes 14 hours 15 minutes. That is a scenario calculation, not a prediction about late buses. Use it to identify a conflict with work or caregiving that needs discussing.

Include the costs a bus ticket does not cover

Travel costs can sit beside lost work time, paid childcare or an occasional alternative ride. Keep each line separate. For an invented comparison, six hours of childcare at an assumed $15 per hour adds $90 to a week, independently of transit fares. That rate is an example, not a local price survey.

If another person supplies transport or childcare, record the actual agreement and a backup question. “My sister can help” is less specific than “she can drive on Mondays but cannot do the return trip on Wednesdays.” A clear limit helps you see the unresolved part without treating help as unlimited.

Ask a provider or community contact about available assistance, but do not deduct an unapproved benefit from the budget. An application for help belongs in a pending column until the arrangement is confirmed.

Make timing part of the discussion about care

Share the door-to-door estimate with the care team. If a return route, job shift or childcare pickup conflicts with the proposed schedule, describe the precise conflict. Ask what appropriate scheduling or access options exist. Do not shorten or skip a prescribed program based on the calculation alone.

For a first assessment, ask whether the visit could take longer than a standard follow-up and how to handle an uncertain finish time. For recurring care, request the expected weekly pattern and any separate appointments. A program’s general opening hours are not the person’s appointment schedule.
